Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen was reformulated twice: what changed, when, and which one you can still buy

Yes, and twice. Every US sunscreen has a label on file with the FDA, and Unseen's labels show two separate changes. First the SPF 40 lost octinoxate and gained octocrylene. Then a new SPF 50 was filed with a different balance of the same four filters. The brand's own store now sells only the SPF 50 face version.

Change one: octinoxate out, octocrylene in

The 2021 label lists octinoxate at 4.5%. By the 2024 label, octinoxate is gone and octocrylene at 4% sits in its place, with avobenzone, homosalate and octisalate unchanged. The SPF stayed at 40. The filer changed at the same time, from Taylor James, Ltd. to Supergoop, LLC, and so did the marketing category, from OTC monograph final to OTC Monograph Drug, the designation that replaced it.

Change two: a new SPF 50

On September 9, 2024 a separate product, Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50, was entered on the register. It keeps avobenzone 3% and octisalate 5%, lowers homosalate from 8% to 7%, and more than doubles octocrylene to 9%. This is the version the brand sells today. We report the strengths as filed; we do not say what the changes do.

For the stick, lip and body products the store does not state a size on the product data, so we give the sizes filed with the FDA. Price per fl oz is ours. Scroll sideways on a phone.

There is no SPF 40 face version on the brand's store any more. We checked every one of its 87 products. The cheapest way to buy Unseen per ounce is the largest tube: $19.18 per fl oz for 74 mL, against $28.09 for the 20 mL.

The old SPF 40 is still listed elsewhere

Dermstore still has a page for Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40, 2.5 fl oz at $48. On September 10, 2026 it showed "Coming soon" and "Sold out", with no add-to-cart. We could not tell whether any remaining stock anywhere is the octinoxate formula or the octocrylene one, because the product name did not change between them. If you are buying an SPF 40 tube from a reseller, the filters depend on when it was made.

Two things in the record that do not match

  • The listing title DailyMed shows for the 2024 SPF 40 label still names octinoxate. The label itself - both the printed Active ingredients panel and the structured ingredient data - lists octocrylene, not octinoxate.
  • The SPF 50 label's structured data gives each filter in milligrams per 100 mL: 3 mg, 7 mg, 5 mg and 9 mg. That would be a thousandth of the stated strength. The printed panel on the same label reads "Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 7%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 9%", so the structured figures look like a units slip in the filing.

Not to be confused with

A product called "SPF30 Unseen Sunscreen 01" is on the FDA's label database, filed in July 2025 by Cosmuses Cosmetics (Ningbo) Co., Ltd. It is not a Supergoop product. Its label lists avobenzone 3%, homosalate 10%, octocrylene 10% and octisalate 5%, under their cosmetic names.

What we could not confirm

  • When the SPF 40 face version left the brand's store.
  • Which formula any remaining SPF 40 stock is. The name is the same for both.
  • Why the stick and body products are still SPF 40 while the face product moved to SPF 50.
  • Shipping. The prices here are item prices, not totals.
  • Sephora's listing. Its site returned a bot-protection page on recent checks.

Questions

Was Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen reformulated?
Twice, on the FDA record. The SPF 40 replaced octinoxate 4.5% with octocrylene 4% between its 2021 and 2024 labels, and a new SPF 50 was registered on September 9, 2024 with homosalate 7% and octocrylene 9%.
Does Unseen still contain octinoxate?
Not in any current label. Octinoxate appears only on the 2021 SPF 40 label. The 2024 SPF 40 and the SPF 50 use octocrylene instead.
Can I still buy Unseen SPF 40?
Not from the brand, which now sells only the SPF 50 face version. Dermstore still lists the SPF 40 but showed it as sold out on September 10, 2026.
How much is Unseen SPF 50?
$19 for 20 mL, $38 for 50 mL and $48 for 74 mL on the brand's US store on September 10, 2026. The 74 mL works out cheapest, at $19.18 per fl oz.
