Sunscreen recall 2026 list: the FDA records one, Allies of Skin's The One SPF 50, after seven in 2025, and none for Neutrogena, Banana Boat or Coppertone
One sunscreen recall that started in 2026 is in the FDA's recall records: THE ONE SPF 50 Invisible Sunscreen Gel, sold as Allies of Skin, in four sizes. The recall started on August 14, 2026, covers 82,596 units, and is Class II. The reason, as the FDA records it: "Subpotent Product: Firm Testing indicated the affected product may not reliably provide the SPF 50 protection stated on the label."
Seven sunscreen recalls started in 2025: one from Badger, two from S.C. Johnson for babyganics sunscreens, one from Kabana Skin Care, one from Grace & Fire for Ultra Violette's Velvet Screen, one for Aloe Up, and one from CA Botana covering ten sunscreens sold under several brands. No record from 2025 or 2026 names Neutrogena, Banana Boat or Coppertone. The most recent records that name them started in 2021 and 2022.
The records come from the FDA's Enforcement Report, through the openFDA API, last updated September 23, 2026. We searched it on October 4, 2026. We report what the records say. We do not judge the products, and this page is not advice about any sunscreen you own.

Ultra Violette's record gives the reason in full: "Subpotent/Super-potent Product: Testing of the SPF 50 sunscreen revealed inconsistency in SPF results ranging from SPF 4, 10, 21, 26, 33, 60, 61, and 64." The recalled Velvet Screen was labeled SPF 50 with zinc oxide 22.75%, under NDC 84803-106. That NDC is no longer in the FDA's drug directory. The Velvet Screen that Grace and Fire USA lists now, with a marketing start date of May 27, 2026, is SPF 40, NDC 84803-115, which our Velvet Screen page covers.
Aloe Up's record says: "cGMP deviations: the firm released and distributed product which failed total aerobic microbial count testing."

Why some 2025 recalls have 2026 numbers
The year at the end of a recall number does not follow the date the recall started. Aloe Up's recall started on September 25, 2025 and CA Botana's on October 10, 2025, but both carry numbers ending in 2026. A Banana Boat recall that started in July 2022 is numbered D-0212-2024. If you are looking for 2026 recalls by number, those are not 2026 recalls.
Neutrogena, Banana Boat and Coppertone
| Brand | Last recall by the brand's company | Records | Class |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neutrogena | Started 2021-07-14, Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. | 19 Neutrogena aerosol sprays, plus 1 Aveeno | 2 Class I for benzene, the rest Class II for cGMP deviations |
| Banana Boat | Started 2022-07-29, Edgewell Personal Care Brands | 1, Hair & Scalp Defense Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 | Class I for benzene |
| Coppertone | Started 2021-09-30, Beiersdorf Inc | 8 Pure & Simple and Sport sprays | 5 Class I for benzene, 3 Class II for cGMP deviations |
The Neutrogena sunscreen recall in the FDA's records started on July 14, 2021. Its Class I records give the reason as "Chemical Contamination: presence of benzene". There is one later record that names all three brands: a Family Dollar store recall that started on June 23, 2022 and covered sprays and lotions including Banana Boat, Coppertone, Hawaiian Tropic and a Neutrogena Beach Defense spray, with the reason "CGMP Deviations: product held outside appropriate storage temperature conditions."
What the classes mean
All the 2025 and 2026 sunscreen recalls are Class II except Badger's, which is Class III. The FDA's definitions:
- "Class I recall: a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."
- "Class II recall: a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."
- "Class III recall: a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences."
How we searched
We searched the openFDA drug enforcement API, which holds the FDA's Enforcement Report records. We looked for sunscreen, spf, sun screen, sunblock and broad spectrum in the product description, for spf and sunscreen in the reason for recall, and for the names of ten sunscreen filters in the product description. That returned 185 records, for recalls that started between 2011 and 2026. We read every record whose recall started on or after January 1, 2025. Zinc oxide ointments and skin protectants that are not sunscreens were left out. The 25 sunscreen records that remain are exactly what a single search returns: recall start date from January 1, 2025, and sunscreen or spf in the product description.
The FDA says of its report: "All recalls monitored by FDA are included in the Enforcement Report once they are classified and may be listed prior to classification when FDA determines the firm's removal or correction of a marketed product(s) meets the definition of a recall."
What we could not confirm
- Recalls that started in September 2026 or later. The data was last updated September 23, 2026, and the 2026 recall took 26 days from its start to its Enforcement Report.
- Sunscreens recalled under a description that has none of our search words.
- What the chemical contamination in the Kids by babyganics spray was. The record says only Chemical Contamination.
- Whether Velvet Screen's move from SPF 50 to SPF 40 has anything to do with the recall. We have not seen the brand connect the two.
- Whether The One is still sold anywhere. Its directory listing, NDC 83852-438, was still there on October 4, 2026, which does not tell you whether it is on sale. We did not check stores.
